A progressive jackpot is rarely won and only a few are lucky enough to receive such a prize. But what about the other wins? As a rule of thumb, the lower the amount, the more likely it is that you’ll win it. The lowest combination (usually three symbols in a five-reel, three-row game) of the lowest valued symbol is the most common win. That’s pretty understandable.

We can divide slot games, in terms of frequency of wins, into two main categories – low variance and high variance slots. Low variance slots involve lower risks, which means that you can hope for a longer gaming session, where your balance will be raising or decreasing slowly, where you may play a large number of spins without there being any significant difference in your starting and ending balance.

Low variance games are perfect for players who are looking for ways to effectively kill time, but they won’t be the right choice if you hope to win a massive jackpot. Even the highest jackpot prize in low variance slots is pretty low. On the other hand, you can expect to win more frequently. Some low variance slots pay out, on average, on every other spin, or even more often.

If you choose a high variance game you can’t expect to win very often. In fact, there might be tens or even dozens of spins without a win. The winning combinations in high variance games tend to pay a lot more compared to low variance games. If your aim is to win higher prizes and you’re willing to take greater risks, then you should opt for high variance games.

Return to Player (RTP) Percentage

Return to Player (RTP) is another important element, perhaps even more important than variance. It is expressed as a percentage and it tells you how much of the money that has been wagered by players is returned to them in the form of winnings. A game with an RTP of 95% will return $95 of every $100 that has been wagered and keep $5 as profit.

The RTP percentage is calculated on average, in the long term, and it doesn’t mean that when you wager $100 you should expect to have $95 at the end of your session. Games with higher RTP return more money, which means that you are more likely to win if you play games with an RTP of 97% than ones that have a 93% RTP.

Some slot games feature RTP percentages higher than 98% and even 99%, which makes them quite favorable.

Progressive Strategies Can’t Be Applied

Some players like to employ certain progressive strategies when they’re playing slots which may involve increasing their wager after a loss, but statistically speaking those systems make no sense when it comes to slots. In fact, you may even lose a lot of money in a short period of time.
